In 1882 John Lake chose a site on the east bank of the Saskatchewan river to establish a temperance colony. He named this site "Saskatoon" after the Cree word "missakqhahtoomina", used for a large delicious purple berry found in the area. This colony became a city in 1906, one year after the creation of the Province of Saskatchewan.
